Ingredients
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup butter, softened
- 2 cups white sugar
- 4 eggs
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 tablespoon vinegar
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 2 tablespoons red food coloring
Frosting:
- 1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese, softened
- 1/2 cup butter, softened
- 4 cups confectioners’ sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa, baking soda, and salt.
- In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs one at a time. Mix in vanilla and food coloring.
- Add the flour mixture alternately with buttermilk and vinegar. Mix until smooth.
- Divide batter evenly between prepared pans and bake for 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
- For the frosting, beat cream cheese and butter until smooth. Gradually add confectioners’ sugar and vanilla; beat until smooth.
- When the cake is cool, spread frosting between layers and on the outer surface.
